A selective, sustained mentorship experience for students ready to move beyond understanding existing work and pursue a focused question with the potential for an original contribution.

THE CENTRAL IDEA

From Understanding to Original Inquiry

The fellowship begins with a mathematically grounded understanding of a real problem and its literature. The student then identifies a tractable open direction, develops an appropriate method, and works through the uncertainty, revision, and evidence required for original research.

THE FELLOWSHIP QUESTION

What can the student add?

The goal is not novelty for its own sake. It is a defensible piece of work that may produce genuinely novel results—or clarify, extend, test, or reframe something meaningful.

HOW THE FELLOWSHIP WORKS

A Rigorous Path from Question to Contribution

Working one-on-one with a university professor, the student develops the judgment and technical independence needed to carry an original project forward.

Define an Original Question

Identify a focused question that is meaningful, mathematically grounded, and realistic within the fellowship.

Build the Method

Select or develop the analytical, computational, or theoretical tools needed to investigate the question.

Investigate and Iterate

Test ideas, examine evidence, confront failed approaches, and revise the project as understanding deepens.

Interpret and Communicate

Determine what the work actually establishes, state its limitations honestly, and present the contribution clearly.

WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY

Original Work. Serious Communication. A Strong Academic Record.

The fellowship includes the core academic practices developed in Topical Review—mathematical grounding, literature review, report writing, and presentation—then extends them into an original research project.

Original Research Project

Complete a sustained investigation organized around a focused question and a clearly articulated contribution.

Research Report and Certificate

Produce a substantive academic report and receive a REACH@Lyceum certificate recognizing successful completion of the fellowship.

Conference-Ready Presentation

Prepare a research poster, digital presentation, and oral explanation suitable for an academic audience.

Possible Publication

Exceptional projects may be developed toward submission to an appropriate journal or proceedings venue; publication is never guaranteed.

ISEF Project Pathway

Where the project and student are eligible, prepare the research and presentation materials for the student’s local or regional ISEF-affiliated fair—the required first stage toward higher levels of competition.

Letter of Recommendation

Receive a detailed recommendation reflecting the mentor’s direct knowledge of the student’s mathematical maturity, initiative, independence, and research work.

WHO IT IS FOR

For Students Ready to Own a Difficult Question

Admission is selective. The fellowship is designed for students whose preparation, persistence, and independence make a serious original project both appropriate and productive.

Mathematical Readiness

The student has the background—or demonstrated capacity to acquire it—needed to engage with the project’s core mathematics.

Research Independence

The student can work consistently between meetings, document decisions, respond to feedback, and take increasing ownership of the investigation.

Intellectual Resilience

The student is prepared for ambiguity, failed attempts, slow progress, and the possibility that a responsible result may be narrower than initially hoped.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

The Student’s Work Remains the Student’s Own

Mentorship provides mathematical guidance, intellectual challenge, methodological support, and detailed feedback. The student remains responsible for the reasoning, analysis, writing, and presentation of the work.

MENTORSHIP BY A UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR

Guidance Without Removing Ownership

The mentor helps the student make better decisions, recognize weak arguments, refine methods, and maintain scholarly standards—while preserving the independence required for authentic research.

POSSIBLE ACADEMIC PATHWAYS

Work Prepared for a Wider Academic Audience

Strong projects may be prepared for conference submission, an ISEF-affiliated local or regional fair, or possible publication in an appropriate venue. Each pathway requires its own eligibility, documentation, review, and selection process.

REACH@Lyceum supports preparation and presentation; acceptance, advancement, awards, and publication depend on project quality and the decisions of independent organizers, judges, editors, or reviewers.

The Research Fellowship develops more than a final project. It teaches the student to work responsibly with uncertainty, recognize the limits of a result, defend conclusions with evidence, and carry a difficult question from first intuition to clear scholarly communication.
